Teenagers of 2017 school leaving age now eligible for MenACWY vaccination
From April 2017, all those aged 17 and 18 years old (born 01/09/1998-31/08/1999), most of whom will be leaving school in summer 2017, became eligible for MenACWY vaccination and have been invited by text or letter for vaccination at their GP Surgery.
Older teenagers and 'fresher' students going to university for the first time are at high risk of infection because they tend to live in close contact in shared accommodation, such as university halls of residence and these are the groups invited for vaccination at their GP Surgery. Younger teenagers are now routinely vaccinated at school, however can be vaccinated here if they missed out at school.
Vaccinating teenagers against Men W should have the added benefit of indirectly protecting other age groups, so please attend for vaccination if you are eligible.
Those who have not taken up the offer of vaccination but became 18 since 1/9/2015, and those still under 25 going on to their first higher education are all still eligible.
The Men ACWY vaccine protects against four different causes of Meningitis and septicaemia –meningococcal (Men) A, C, W and Y diseases. Cases of meningitis and septicaemia due to MenW have continued to increase overall in England, in all age groups other than infants and 15-19 year old teenagers (who are all now routinely vaccinated). With early diagnosis and antibiotic treatment, most people with meningococcal disease make a full recovery, however around a third of cases in non-vaccinated 15-19 year olds have been fatal.
Early data from the first cohort vaccinated under the MenACWY catch-up programme (who left school in 2015) found that there were 69% fewer MenW cases than predicted by trend analysis in the first year after the start of the programme, so vaccination works.
There have been no cases in MenACWY vaccinated teenagers eligible under the programme.
